Kyankwanzi Retreat Highlights Security Awareness and Responsible Self-Defence Training

KYANKWANZI: On the third day of the ongoing Ministers’ Leadership Retreat at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Richard Todwong, participated in a Skills at Arms training session. During the practical exercises, he demonstrated proficiency in handling the AK-47 rifle.

Hon. Clement Kenneth Ongalo Obote reportedly emphasized the importance of understanding the basic principles of AK-47 handling and the role of self-defence training within the framework of responsible weapon use.

According to reports attributed to various political stakeholders, there have been discussions on whether young people should be given opportunities to acquire basic knowledge of self-defence and security awareness through educational institutions, including colleges and universities.

The discussions have also referenced past training systems that were reportedly available in the 1990s. Some stakeholders have suggested reviewing and strengthening relevant programmes so that institutions of higher learning can provide both theoretical and practical knowledge related to national security, civic responsibility, and self-defence.

Supporters of the proposal argue that any such training should focus on protection, lawful conduct, and responsible citizenship, while respecting human rights and ensuring that acquired skills are not misused.
