Former Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago Faces Treason-Related Charges After Security Arrest

Former Kampala Lord Mayor and prominent opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago is facing treason and misprision of treason charges following his arrest by armed security operatives earlier this week, authorities have confirmed.
According to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, Lukwago is currently being held at Kiira Division Police Station in Wakiso District after being taken from his Wakaliga residence by security personnel on Monday. He is expected to be formally presented before court as investigations continue.
Police say the charges being prepared stem from allegations linking Lukwago to ongoing proceedings involving detained opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye, who is separately facing treason charges. Authorities have not yet disclosed full details of the specific allegations against Lukwago.
Lukwago, who also serves as a senior member of the opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was reportedly arrested in an early morning operation that involved armed operatives entering his home. His detention sparked immediate condemnation from opposition leaders, legal bodies, and human rights activists who questioned the legality and circumstances of his arrest.
Security agencies have not provided a detailed public statement on the operation, but sources cited in local reports indicate that Lukwago was held for more than 48 hours at an undisclosed location before being transferred to police custody. His supporters say he was denied access to legal counsel and family members during the initial period of detention
The development comes amid heightened political tension in Uganda, where several opposition figures linked to Besigye’s legal and political network have faced arrests and court proceedings in recent months.
Lukwago, a long-serving lawyer and former Kampala mayor, has been a central figure in Uganda’s opposition politics and has previously represented high-profile clients in politically sensitive cases.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and further legal steps will be communicated once the Director of Public Prosecutions reviews the case file.
