Hundreds Rescued After Security Forces Raid Boko Haram Stronghold

Hundreds of people held captive by Boko Haram militants have been rescued following a military operation targeting a remote insurgent hideout in northeastern Nigeria, security officials said.

The operation, carried out by Nigerian security forces in a mountainous region long used by the extremist group as a base of operations, resulted in the liberation of a large number of hostages, including women and children. Authorities said many of those rescued had been held for extended periods after being abducted during attacks on villages across the region.

Military officials reported that troops launched a coordinated assault on the hideout after gathering intelligence on the location of the captives. Several militants were killed during the operation, while others reportedly fled into surrounding terrain. Security forces continue to conduct clearance operations in the area to locate remaining insurgents and prevent further attacks.

The rescued individuals are undergoing medical examinations, security screening and humanitarian assistance before being reunited with their families or transferred to rehabilitation centres. Aid agencies have been mobilised to provide food, shelter and psychological support to those affected by their captivity.

Boko Haram and its splinter factions have waged an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria for more than a decade, carrying out attacks on civilians, military installations and public infrastructure. The conflict has displaced millions of people and contributed to one of Africa’s most significant humanitarian crises.

Government officials described the latest rescue operation as a major success in ongoing efforts to dismantle militant networks operating in the region. However, security analysts caution that insurgent groups continue to pose a threat despite sustained military pressure, particularly in remote border areas where access remains limited.

Authorities have pledged to intensify counterinsurgency operations while expanding support programmes aimed at helping survivors rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities.
