Uganda’s U-17 national football team, the Uganda Cubs, have been celebrated following their historic qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar 2026.
The young stars received a warm reception upon their return home after securing qualification through a dramatic playoff victory against Ghana during the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
The Cubs booked their World Cup place after defeating Ghana 8-7 in a tense penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw. Uganda twice fought back from behind before eventually sealing victory from the spot in one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches.
Players, coaches and football officials were honoured during a special dinner hosted in Kampala, where government leaders, FUFA executives and supporters praised the team for making the nation proud.
Football administrators described the achievement as another major step forward for Ugandan football development, especially at youth level. The qualification also strengthens Uganda’s growing reputation in regional and continental football competitions.
Coach Laryea Kingston commended his players for their discipline, determination and mental strength throughout the qualifiers, saying the team showed courage under pressure against some of Africa’s strongest youth sides.
The Cubs’ campaign attracted national attention after the team produced impressive performances during the tournament, including crucial results that kept their World Cup hopes alive.
Uganda now joins several African nations set to compete at the expanded FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar next year. Sports analysts believe the achievement could inspire a new generation of football talent across the country.
The qualification continues Uganda’s recent progress in youth football, with officials calling for increased investment in academies, schools competitions and player development programmes to sustain future success.
