Liverpool Facing Defensive Blow as Konate Nears Anfield Exit

Friday 29th May 2026

Liverpool could be preparing for another major departure this summer, with French defender Ibrahima Konate reportedly close to leaving the club once his contract expires.

Talks between the Merseyside club and the 27-year-old centre-back have failed to produce a breakthrough, despite negotiations continuing for several months. As things stand, Konate is expected to walk away from Anfield as a free agent at the end of June.

The potential exit would represent another setback for Liverpool’s defensive plans. After already seeing key names move on in recent seasons, losing a first-choice defender without securing a transfer fee would add further pressure on the club’s recruitment strategy.

Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 and quickly established himself as an important figure in the back line. During his time at the club, he formed a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk and helped Liverpool compete for major honours both domestically and in Europe.

Although there had been optimism earlier in the year that a new agreement could be reached, discussions appear to have stalled over contract terms and financial expectations.

Several European giants are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. Paris Saint-Germain are thought to be leading the race for the defender’s signature, while clubs including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have also been linked with interest.

Liverpool are now expected to assess defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season as uncertainty grows around the future of several senior players within the squad.
