Security Operatives Visit Home of Outspoken Former Minister Miria Matembe

Security operatives visited the home of Dr Miria Matembe, Uganda’s first Minister of Ethics and Integrity and a longtime government critic, in an incident reported by the Daily Monitor. Matembe said she had not been able to establish what the operatives wanted.
Matembe, who served as Ethics and Integrity Minister from 1998 to 2003 and later as Woman Member of Parliament for Mbarara District until 2006, has remained one of Uganda’s most vocal critics of President Yoweri Museveni’s government in the years since leaving elective office. She has spoken out repeatedly on issues including alleged abductions of opposition figures, the growing role of the military in civilian institutions, and the conduct of this year’s general election, which she has described as having put the government “at war with its people.”
The visit to her home comes amid a wider pattern of security operations at the residences of Ugandan opposition politicians and critics in recent months. Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was taken from his home in Wakaliga after security operatives scaled his perimeter wall in June. Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was placed under heavy security presence at his home following January’s disputed presidential election. Rights groups and UN officials have raised concerns about the use of unmarked vehicles, plainclothes operatives, and night-time operations targeting government critics in Uganda.
This report is based on limited available information. Further details on the date of the visit, the security agency involved, and any official explanation have not yet been independently confirmed.
