Putin Critic Gunned Down in Poland as Investigators Probe Possible Political Motive

A Russian artist known for his fierce criticism of President Vladimir Putin has been shot dead in Poland in a killing that is sending shockwaves through the Russian exile community across Europe.
Robert Kuzovkov, widely known by his artistic pseudonym Semyon Skrepetsky, was killed in the eastern Polish city of Biała Podlaska near the Belarusian border. According to Polish prosecutors, the 44-year-old was shot multiple times, including a fatal wound to the head.
Kuzovkov had lived in exile after leaving Russia and built a reputation for producing provocative satirical artwork targeting Putin, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and other powerful figures linked to the Kremlin. His work frequently challenged Russian authorities and attracted both praise from opposition supporters and criticism from pro-Kremlin circles.
The artist’s death comes just days after he participated in a protest in Berlin marking Russia Day, where he publicly displayed artwork mocking both Putin and Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Friends and fellow activists say he had previously expressed concerns about threats linked to his political activism.
Polish authorities confirmed that two Belarusian nationals have been detained in connection with the case, although no charges have yet been filed. Investigators are examining whether the shooting was a targeted assassination and have enlisted the support of Poland’s Internal Security Agency.
The killing has reignited concerns about the safety of Russian dissidents living abroad. Poland, a key supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion, has repeatedly warned of foreign espionage and sabotage activities operating within its borders.
Officials have not publicly identified a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing. However, the circumstances surrounding the shooting have prompted widespread speculation among opposition activists and analysts, many of whom point to a pattern of attacks against critics of the Kremlin outside Russia.
As investigators work to establish who ordered the killing and why, Kuzovkov’s death is likely to intensify scrutiny of threats facing political exiles across Europe.
