Pope Leo XIV’s Africa Tour Sparks Joy Among Faithful but Raises Political Concerns

Many African Catholics have warmly welcomed the visit of Pope Leo XIV, whose 11-day tour across the continent has drawn huge crowds and emotional reactions from the faithful. In Angola, one Catholic teacher described seeing the pope in person as a deeply spiritual and unforgettable moment, reflecting the enthusiasm surrounding the visit.

The tour, which began in Algeria before moving through Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea, has focused on peacebuilding, reconciliation and speaking out against corruption and the exploitation of Africa’s natural resources. In conflict-hit regions such as Cameroon’s Anglophone areas, many locals expressed hope that the pope’s message would inspire unity after years of violence.

However, the visit has also sparked criticism. Observers argue that traveling to countries led by long-serving presidents risks appearing to legitimize entrenched regimes. Leaders such as Paul Biya, in power for over four decades, and Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled for decades, have faced allegations of corruption and human rights abuses.

Tensions in Cameroon remain high following disputed elections and deadly protests, while Equatorial Guinea continues to face criticism over corruption despite its oil wealth and widespread poverty. Some activists warn the pope’s visit could be used as a public relations tool by governments seeking legitimacy.

The trip has also coincided with the first anniversary of the death of Pope Francis, whose legacy of advocating for the poor was highlighted by Leo during the journey.

Despite the controversy, the Vatican maintains the visit is pastoral, not political, emphasizing dialogue with leaders and support for local communities. For many believers, the pope’s presence remains a powerful symbol of hope  even as debate continues over its wider political impact.
