End of an Era? Pizza Hut Sold for $2.7 Billion After Years of Struggle

One of the world’s most recognizable restaurant brands is changing hands after years of declining sales and growing competition.

Yum! Brands, the parent company of Pizza Hut, has agreed to sell the pizza chain in two separate deals worth a combined $2.7 billion. The move marks a major turning point for the 68-year-old brand, which has struggled to keep pace with changing consumer habits and fierce competition in the fast-food industry.

Under the agreement, private equity firm LongRange Capital will acquire Pizza Hut’s operations outside mainland China for approximately $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, Yum China Holdings will purchase the chain’s mainland China business for around $1.2 billion. The transactions are expected to be completed later this year.

The sale follows a strategic review launched by Yum! Brands in late 2025 after Pizza Hut reported declining sales and continued difficulties in key markets. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to close around 250 underperforming restaurants in the United States as part of efforts to revive the business.

Founded in Wichita, Kansas, in 1958, Pizza Hut grew into a global giant with nearly 20,000 restaurants across more than 100 countries. However, the chain has increasingly lost ground to rivals such as Domino’s while also facing pressure from food delivery platforms, rising operating costs and changing customer preferences.

Industry analysts say Pizza Hut has long been viewed as the weakest performer among Yum!’s major brands, which also include KFC and Taco Bell. By selling the chain, Yum! is expected to focus more heavily on its faster-growing businesses while allowing Pizza Hut’s new owners to pursue a turnaround strategy.

Despite the challenges, company executives insist the brand still has significant potential. LongRange Capital has indicated that it plans to invest in Pizza Hut’s global franchise network and modernize operations in an effort to return the chain to growth.

For millions of customers around the world, Pizza Hut remains a household name. But after decades under the same corporate umbrella, the iconic pizza chain is entering a new chapter—one its new owners hope will bring it back to its former glory.
