Marco Silva Agrees to Replace Mourinho as Benfica Head Coach

LISBON — Marco Silva has agreed to become the new head coach of Benfica, replacing José Mourinho, who is set to leave the Portuguese club for a return to Real Madrid.
According to multiple reports, Benfica have reached a full agreement with Silva, who recently ended his five-year spell as Fulham manager. The Portuguese coach is expected to sign a contract running until the end of the 2027–28 season, with an option to extend for a further year.
Silva’s appointment comes as Benfica prepare for the departure of Mourinho, who has agreed to join Real Madrid in a deal reportedly worth €15 million. The Spanish club is yet to formally confirm the move.
Mourinho’s exit marks the end of his second spell in charge of Benfica, during which he guided the team through a competitive domestic campaign and European fixtures. His return to Madrid would mark a second stint at the Santiago Bernabéu, where he previously managed between 2010 and 2013.
Benfica moved quickly to secure Silva as his replacement after identifying him as a leading candidate for the role. The former Everton, Watford, and Hull City manager is regarded as one of Portugal’s most experienced modern coaches, with extensive Premier League experience.
The managerial reshuffle is expected to be officially confirmed once Mourinho’s move to Real Madrid is finalized.
