NEC, Kyambogo University Partner to Upgrade 1.3km Road Network

The National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) has partnered with Kyambogo University to upgrade a 1.3-kilometre road network within the institution at a cost of sh2.99 billion, in a move aimed at improving campus infrastructure.

Under a signed agreement, NEC will undertake works including drainage, earthworks, pavement construction, and asphalt surfacing. The project is expected to be completed within three to six months.
The roads set for upgrade include the stretch from the main roundabout to Kabaka Gate, UPK Engineering Road, Kisonsokole Road, as well as MacKay Loop 1 and 2, and MacKay Road.
University Secretary and Accounting Officer Arthur Katongole said the institution opted for NEC after facing repeated challenges with private contractors, including delays and mismanagement of funds. He noted that the decision was influenced by NEC’s previous work, which impressed the university.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka described the partnership as important, noting that the project had been planned before the COVID-19 pandemic but was delayed. He urged NEC to deliver high-quality work, saying this could lead to more collaborations in the future.
NEC, the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has been involved in various sectors including construction, agriculture, and manufacturing, playing a role in national development despite facing criticism over its involvement in civilian business.
NEC General Manager Lt. Gen. James Mugira welcomed the partnership and assured that the project would be executed to high standards, emphasizing the shared goal of supporting Uganda’s development.
