Trump is beset by hard dilemmas and no easy wins with Iran

The US President Donald Trump is facing a high-stakes decision over Iran, as the prospect of another conflict emerges at a time when many Americans appear weary of political turmoil and economic strain. With approval ratings below 40% and midterm elections approaching, any move toward military action would be a major gamble, even as Trump signals toughness through military posturing and renewed diplomatic talks with Tehran in Oman.
Iran is seen as particularly vulnerable due to internal unrest, a looming leadership succession crisis, and weakened regional allies such as Hamas and Hezbollah. These factors have fueled arguments within US and Israeli circles that this may be a rare window to pressure or even decisively weaken Tehran. Trump, who has previously ordered strikes on Iranian targets and assassinated a top Iranian commander, appears convinced that forceful action strengthens his negotiating hand.
However, analysts warn that military action carries enormous risks, including civilian casualties, regional instability, retaliation against US allies, and political backlash at home. Diplomacy also offers no easy exit, as Washington and Tehran remain far apart on key demands beyond Iran’s nuclear program. The decision, observers say, may ultimately come down to Trump’s instincts, a choice that could define both his legacy and the future of US-Iran relations.
Iran, however, is reportedly only willing to discuss its nuclear program, particularly after last year’s US strikes. Tehran is expected to seek sanctions relief in exchange for limits on uranium enrichment, a scenario that could force the Trump administration into a deal similar to the 2015 nuclear agreement it has long criticized for excluding missile development and Iran’s regional influence.
