Flying colours for Ugandans at Level II Golf Rules
Game Of Rules. (L-R): Wang’ombe, Mbaguta, Kacungira, Tumusiime, Sommerville, Nuwagira and Aluku after the course in Karen, Nairobi.
Not that they were expected to fail, but it was another giant leap for the game in Uganda after it was confirmed that all the Ugandans – five in number – that attended the Level II Golf Rules Seminar at Karen Country Club in Nairobi, Kenya had passed with flying colours.
The five that attended are Sam Kacungira, Gloria Mbaguta, Collins Nuwagira, Cyrill Aluku and Edwin Tumusiime, the latter two attending this level of rules seminar for the second time having attended before in 2017 and 2015 respectively.
Three other Ugandans have attended the Level III; Oscar Ssemawere and Tumusiime in 2015 and Gad Musasizi in South Africa 2016.
“After completing rules of golf Level 2, I can now be a referee in a golf tournament,” exclaimed left-handed national women’s team player Gloria Mbaguta. Daniel Sommerville, a rules manager from R&A in Scotland, with the help of Kenyans; Vincent Wang’ombe and David Kihara conducted the course which will also help the attendees enhance their golf knowledge.
“I have done it (Level II) before but I wanted to refresh as is per the requirement every four years. These rules keep changing,” disclosed Tumusiime, the captain of Entebbe Club. In all, the rule book was consolidated from 34 to 24 rules, but each of these has sub-rules. There’s a lot to consider. Some of these changes might require a change in thinking on the part of players, for example in dropping a ball; it must be dropped by the player from knee height instead of shoulder height whenever a drop is specified for relief.
Uganda Golf Union is currently planning to conduct a Level One Rules School early next year to help empower more golfers, locally.
