CAF CL: KCCA not safe at all as Mutebi anticipates tricky return leg against Petro de Luanda.

Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) picked up a goalless draw away to Angolan side Petro de Luanda in their first leg clash of the CAF Champions League first round qualifiers.

The two sides are set to lock horns again in the second leg tomorrow; Friday 27th, at the Star Times Stadium, Lugogo.

With the scores still level, both sides need victory to seal qualification into the group stages of the premier club competition. However, Petro hold an upper hand as a scoring draw will see them qualify by virtue of the away goals rule.

Therefore, the onus is on KCCA to push for victory. And manager Mike Mutebi has echoed his concerns over his side’s failure to score in Luanda, a situation that puts them at risk going into the second leg.



Speaking during the pre-match press conference today, Mutebi promised to attack his opponents and that the fans should expect a goal galore from the match.

“We are not safe at all. We face a tricky match tomorrow despite the fact that we have the advantage because we are playing at home. Overall, all I can say is we should expect a good match,” Mutebi told the media.

“We are playing against a team that uses the ball extremely well, they always play on the front foot and that will help us play our way because I believe we have enough to negotiate whatever challenge they will throw at us.” He added.

Mutebi has so far overseen three champions league campaigns in the last four years, and has come up against Angolan opposition twice; progressing past Premeiro de Agosto in 2017 on away goals rule.

The gaffer admits that it is the opposition from Angola that has given him the hardest time to navigate past and he doesn’t think it will be any different this time.

“The game will not be like a walk in the park. Of all the clubs we have played against on the continent, I think the Angolan clubs Petro de Luanda and Agosto have given us the hardest time,”

But in the end, we shall prevail. You should anticipate a lot of goals given what both teams need, and don’t be surprised if the game ended 4-2 in favor of KCCA.” He continued.

A win for KCCA FC over Petro de Luanda on Saturday will see the club qualify to the CAF champions league group stages for the second time since 2015.
