One Ugandan Confirmed Dead as Government Orders Evacuation from South Africa

KAMPALA — The Ugandan government has ordered the evacuation of its nationals from parts of South Africa after escalating violence left one Ugandan dead and hundreds more stranded in areas affected by unrest.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that more than 700 Ugandans have appealed for urgent assistance to return home, citing growing insecurity, looting and attacks targeting businesses in several communities.
According to Ugandan officials, the deceased was killed during the recent wave of violence that has disrupted normal life in parts of South Africa. Authorities said efforts are underway to support the victim’s family while working with South African officials to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
The government has since activated emergency response measures through Uganda’s High Commission in Pretoria to coordinate the evacuation of citizens who have expressed a desire to leave. Priority will be given to vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly and those living in the worst-affected areas.
Many Ugandans operating small businesses say they have suffered heavy losses after shops were looted or forced to close due to security concerns. Others reported being unable to move freely because of ongoing unrest and fears of further attacks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all Ugandans in South Africa to remain vigilant, avoid areas experiencing violence and maintain close contact with Uganda’s diplomatic mission for guidance and emergency assistance.
Uganda is also working closely with South African authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens and facilitate the evacuation process where necessary.
The unrest has raised fresh concerns about the safety of foreign nationals living and working in South Africa, where periodic outbreaks of violence have previously targeted migrant-owned businesses and communities.
Government officials say arrangements for the evacuation are progressing, with affected Ugandans being advised to register with the High Commission to enable authorities to coordinate transport and other logistical support.
As efforts continue to bring stranded citizens home, the Ugandan government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its nationals abroad while calling for calm and the restoration of peace in the affected areas.
