Makerere Cements Continental Status with Top 25 Ranking in Africa

KAMPALA — Makerere University has strengthened its reputation as one of Africa’s leading institutions of higher learning after being ranked among the continent’s top universities, further solidifying its position as Uganda’s highest-ranked university. According to the latest continental rankings, Makerere was placed 23rd in Africa, reflecting its growing influence in research, innovation and academic excellence.
The ranking places the century-old institution ahead of many universities across the continent and reaffirms its status as a leading centre of higher education in East Africa. Makerere also retained its position as Uganda’s top-ranked university, maintaining a long-standing tradition of academic leadership in the region.
Founded in 1922, Makerere University has produced some of Africa’s most influential leaders, scholars and professionals. The institution continues to attract students and researchers from across the continent, driven by its strong academic programmes, expanding research portfolio and growing international partnerships.
University leaders have previously attributed Makerere’s improved performance in global and regional rankings to increased investment in research, enhanced international collaboration and a deliberate focus on innovation. In recent assessments by global ranking bodies, the university recorded particularly strong scores in research quality and international outlook, areas considered crucial in measuring academic impact.
The latest recognition comes at a time when African universities are facing increased competition for research funding, global partnerships and international student enrolment. Despite these challenges, Makerere has continued to improve its visibility on the global academic stage through groundbreaking work in public health, agriculture, climate resilience and technology.
Education experts say the ranking is likely to boost the university’s international profile and attract more collaborations with institutions around the world. It also strengthens Uganda’s position in the regional higher education landscape, where universities are increasingly being evaluated on research output, teaching quality and societal impact.
Beyond continental rankings, Makerere remains among the top universities globally, featuring in several international assessments, including the Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings. The university has consistently been recognised for its contribution to knowledge creation and its role in shaping Africa’s future workforce.
As the institution approaches its next phase of growth, university officials say the focus remains on expanding research excellence, strengthening industry partnerships and improving the student experience, with the goal of climbing even higher in future global rankings.
For Uganda’s flagship university, the latest ranking is not only a measure of academic achievement but also a reflection of its enduring role as one of Africa’s most influential centres of learning.
