FIFA Confirms Full Compensation for Somali Referee Barred From World Cup

FIFA will pay Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan his full World Cup remuneration despite his inability to officiate at the tournament after being denied entry into the United States, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Artan, who was selected to become the first Somali referee in FIFA World Cup history, was prevented from entering the United States ahead of the 2026 tournament. U.S. authorities cited alleged links to individuals suspected of involvement with terrorist organizations, allegations that the referee has strongly denied.
Despite missing the competition, FIFA has committed to honoring the full tournament fee Artan would have received had he officiated at the World Cup. The exact amount has not been publicly disclosed, although World Cup referees are understood to receive substantial compensation and performance-related bonuses.
The 34-year-old official, who was named Africa’s Referee of the Year in 2025, had been viewed as a trailblazer for Somali football. His exclusion from the tournament sparked widespread debate within the football community and prompted calls for FIFA to support the official financially.
In a further show of support, UEFA has appointed Artan to officiate the UEFA Super Cup clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in August, ensuring he remains involved in one of football’s most prestigious fixtures despite his World Cup setback.
Artan received a hero’s welcome upon his return to Somalia, where many supporters praised his achievements and viewed his World Cup selection as a landmark moment for the country’s football development.
While the controversy has raised broader questions about immigration policies and access to major international sporting events, FIFA has maintained that entry decisions remain the responsibility of host nations. Nevertheless, the governing body’s decision to provide full compensation ensures that Artan will not suffer financially from his absence at football’s biggest tournament.
