Danish Environmental Journalist Detained in Uganda, Set for Transfer to Kasese

KAMPALA — Danish environmental journalist, explorer and scientist Klaus Thymann has been detained by Ugandan authorities over alleged wildlife-related offences, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Thymann was arrested on Monday at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) headquarters in Kampala while seeking an official permit related to his work, according to reports. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said he is being held at Kira Road Police Station and is expected to be transferred to Kasese District, where the alleged offences are said to have occurred.
Uganda Wildlife Authority spokesperson Bashir Hangi confirmed the arrest but declined to disclose details of the case, saying more information would be released after internal briefings.
Thymann is an internationally recognised environmental journalist and photographer whose work has focused on documenting the impact of climate change on some of the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems. He is the founder of Project Pressure, an environmental organisation that has led several expeditions to the Rwenzori Mountains to record the retreat of East Africa’s remaining tropical glaciers.
His research and photography have been featured by major international media organisations and scientific institutions, including NASA, BBC, CNN, National Geographic and The New York Times.
In recent years, Thymann and his team have worked with partners to document changes in the Rwenzori Mountains, where glaciers have continued to shrink. Earlier research by Project Pressure produced detailed photographic comparisons and a three-dimensional model of the remaining ice on Mount Stanley, highlighting the effects of glacier retreat.
As of Tuesday, police had not announced any formal charges against Thymann, and authorities had not publicly outlined the specific wildlife-related offences under investigation.
The detention has attracted international attention because of Thymann’s longstanding work documenting the environmental changes taking place in the Rwenzori Mountains. Authorities are expected to provide further details once he is transferred to Kasese for the next stage of the investigation.
