Sir Alex Ferguson's multi-million-dollar role ended by INEOS as Man United push through ruthless cost-cutting measures

It’s a decision that has left many Manchester United fans raising their eyebrows.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary manager who led the Red Devils to an astounding 38 trophies, has seen his ambassadorial contract with the club come to an end thanks to cost-cutting measures by the club’s new part-owners, INEOS.

After his retirement in 2013, Ferguson stayed on with the club in a global ambassador role, receiving a reported £2.16 million ($2.83m) per year for his services.

For over a decade, his name has been tied to the club, both as an ambassador and a non-executive director. But it seems the times are changing at Old Trafford.

Ferguson the latest to experience United cost-cutting measures

INEOS, who acquired a 27.7% stake in United in February 2024, is tightening the club’s belt across the board. The new regime, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has already slashed around 250 jobs at the club and axed perks like free travel for staff.

Now, it’s Ferguson’s turn. In a face-to-face meeting at Old Trafford, Ratcliffe informed Ferguson that the club could no longer justify the large payments, according to The Athletic. He will no longer be paid for the ambassadorial role after the end of the 2024/25 season.

Though Ferguson will no longer be paid for his ambassadorial duties, he will remain a non-executive director and continue attending matches. The Athletic’s Adam Crafton said the split was “dealt with amicably”, but some fans can’t help but feel this is the end of an era.

Ratcliffe, a long-time admirer of Ferguson, spoke highly of the 82-year-old back in February, saying: “He’s got a lot of experience, a lot of stories to tell, and a lot of thoughts about the club… He really understands the values and traditions of the club.”

But even legends can’t escape the financial reality facing United.
