Besigye Tells Court He Was Produced 'Under Duress' as Treason Case Continues

KAMPALA — Veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye on Friday told the High Court that he had been brought before the court “under duress,” as proceedings in his treason case resumed amid heightened public and political interest.

Appearing alongside his co-accused, Besigye informed the court that he did not appear voluntarily, maintaining that his continued detention and the circumstances surrounding his appearance remained a matter of concern.

The four-time presidential candidate also declined to enter a plea immediately, saying he wished to first consult with his legal team. In accordance with criminal procedure, the court entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf, allowing the case to proceed.

Besigye and his co-accused face charges of treason and misprision of treason, allegations they have consistently denied. The prosecution maintains that it has evidence to support the charges, while the defence has challenged both the legal and procedural basis of the case.

The hearing took place under heavy security at the High Court, with supporters, lawyers and members of the public closely following the proceedings.

Besigye, a longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni and a four-time presidential contender, has been in custody since his arrest in November 2024. His detention and prosecution have drawn significant attention from political leaders, civil society organisations and human rights groups, many of whom have raised concerns over due process and the length of his detention.

During the hearing, the court directed that the case proceed in line with the established judicial process, with both the prosecution and defence expected to make further submissions at subsequent sessions.

The treason proceedings remain among the country’s most closely watched legal cases, carrying significant political implications as Uganda moves toward the next electoral cycle.

Besigye remains on remand as the High Court continues to hear the case.
